Ten rescued after two-hour elevator entrapment at Madaripur hospital

Fire service personnel rescued ten people, including several women, from a malfunctioning elevator at the 250-bed Madaripur District Hospital on Tuesday after they remained trapped for two hours. The group had become immobilized between floors, sparking a frantic effort to reach them as temperatures inside the confined space began to rise.
The incident occurred at approximately 12:00 p.m. when the group boarded the elevator on the fifth floor intending to descend. The lift abruptly ceased operation, leaving the passengers stranded and unable to force the doors open. The prolonged confinement triggered panic among those trapped, leading them to call for assistance while awaiting emergency intervention.
Madaripur Fire Service Inspector Sheikh Mohammad Ahaduzzaman stated that responders arrived following a distress call and successfully evacuated all ten individuals by 2:00 p.m. Preliminary investigations suggest the stall was caused by a technical failure within the elevator’s operating system.
Hospital Resident Medical Officer Akhil Sarkar confirmed the safe extraction of all passengers, noting that no injuries were reported during the ordeal. Fire service officials indicated that the swift response prevented a more serious outcome, and all those rescued were reported to be in good health following their release.
