Sylhet Examiner Sacked After Caught Grading HSC Exam Papers at Tea Stall

The Sylhet Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board has issued a show-cause notice to an examiner caught evaluating Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) answer scripts in a public tea stall, marking a significant breach of academic protocol. The board has also established a three-member committee to investigate the incident, with instructions to submit a formal report within three working days.
The incident occurred Saturday night near the main gate of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology. According to reports, the examiner, Iqbal Hossain—a part-time lecturer at Metro City Women’s College—was observed assessing examination papers while surrounded by friends. Allegations have surfaced suggesting that these individuals were also participating in the evaluation process. Education board officials intervened upon receiving reports of the activity, catching the teacher in the act and seizing approximately 400 answer scripts.
In response to the breach, Metro City Women’s College authorities have terminated Hossain’s employment. Principal Mazaharul Haque confirmed that the decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the college’s governing body held Sunday afternoon. Formal notification of the dismissal has been forwarded to both the teacher and the education board.
Sylhet Education Board Chairman Professor Md. Anwar Hossain Chowdhury confirmed that the investigation is underway to determine the extent of the academic malpractice. He stated that the board will evaluate the committee’s findings before deciding on further disciplinary measures. Hossain, a former student of the university’s Bengali department, now faces potential permanent blacklisting from all future examination-related duties conducted by the board.
