Sylhet City Corporation to Remove Obstructive Signage From Historic Keane Bridge

The Sylhet City Corporation has decided to relocate a controversial “I Love Sylhet” signage that had partially obscured the view of the historic Keane Bridge, a landmark structure spanning the Surma River for nearly 90 years.
Sylhet City Corporation Administrator Abdul Qaiyum Chowdhury confirmed the decision on Thursday evening, noting that he had consulted with the corporation’s chief executive officer and other relevant officials regarding the matter. Chowdhury stated that the signage would be dismantled and moved to a more appropriate, aesthetically pleasing location in the near future.
The decision followed public outcry and a report published by Prothom Alo, which highlighted how the signage—constructed on a raised concrete base on the riverbank opposite the Sylhet Circuit House—blocked the visual integrity of the bridge. The structure, which sits at the northern end of the bridge, had become a focal point of criticism among social media users who argued that the installation compromised the heritage value of the 90-year-old landmark.
At the time of the announcement, construction on the illuminated signage, which features the branding of the City Corporation alongside a mobile network service provider, was nearing completion. Authorities have pledged to finalize the relocation process promptly to restore the unobstructed view of the historic bridge.
