Sylhet Border Village Gains Popularity as Emerging Tourist Destination

A verdant expanse nestled along the Bangladesh-India border in Sylhet’s Jaintiapur upazila has emerged as an unlikely tourist destination, drawing visitors with its dramatic mountain vistas and tranquil rural scenery. Known locally as Minatila, the area sits directly adjacent to the “no man’s land,” offering views of cloud-draped hills and the meandering Rangpani River.
The site, situated roughly 1.5 kilometers from the Sylhet-Tamabil highway via the Bangla Bazar route, has gained significant traction on social media platforms like Facebook and TikTok. Often dubbed “Mini Switzerland” by visitors captivated by its lush landscape, the area is defined by its pristine green fields, vegetable patches, and newly planted rice saplings. The boundary is marked by Indian mountain ranges that act as a natural backdrop, separated from the Bangladeshi side by a barbed-wire fence and the flowing waters of the Rangpani River, which originates as the Chagalkhauri River in India.
The area remains a blend of quiet agricultural life and emerging tourism. While local villagers continue to graze cattle and transport sand via traditional wooden boats, the small field at Minatila now features makeshift football goalposts and bamboo benches. These additions have turned the once-isolated border point into a gathering spot for youths and weekend sightseers traveling from neighboring districts.
Despite the growing popularity, the infrastructure at Minatila remains underdeveloped. Local residents and sports organizers point out that the site lacks essential amenities, including proper roads and sanitary facilities, which could hinder sustainable tourism.
Jaintiapur Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Sunanda Roy acknowledged the site’s rising profile and the unique challenges posed by its proximity to the international border. She noted that while security and regulatory constraints must be observed in such sensitive regions, the administration intends to evaluate potential initiatives to improve the area’s facilities and make it more accessible and tourist-friendly in the future.
