Emergency responders in Chattogram’s Rangunia upazila have suspended the search for a 20-year-old woman who went missing after a boat capsized in the Karnaphuli River on Wednesday. Rescue operations, which continued until nightfall, failed to locate Konika Das, a resident of the Kodala union fishing village.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. as the boat, carrying six passengers, navigated the river between Chandraghona Dewanji Hat and the Kodala Ghat. According to reports, the vessel was caught in a sudden, intense squall that caused it to overturn in the middle of the waterway.

The passengers were traveling to attend a family event at the home of the missing woman’s mother. Local residents initiated an immediate rescue effort, successfully recovering five individuals, including the boat operator, who were subsequently transported to the Chandraghona Christian Mission Hospital for treatment. Among the survivors, a two-year-old child remains in critical condition and has been admitted to the intensive care unit.

Rangunia Fire Service officials confirmed that the search was called off due to darkness, with plans to resume at first light on Thursday. Local police and administration officials have been coordinating with fire crews since the accident to locate the woman, who had been married for only seven months. Authorities remain on-site as the search efforts continue.
