Rajshahi police inspector withdrawn after video surfaces showing alleged bribe collection

A police inspector in Rajshahi’s Bagmara sub-district has been withdrawn from his post following the circulation of a viral video that purportedly shows him accepting a bribe inside his office. Kamlesh Das, who served as the inspector of investigation at Bagmara Police Station, was reassigned to the Rajshahi Police Lines on Monday morning, hours after the footage surfaced on social media.
The 52-second video, which sparked widespread public outcry, depicts Inspector Das seated at his desk receiving a thick envelope from an unidentified individual. The footage shows the officer sliding the envelope beneath his desk before retrieving a stack of banknotes—primarily 1,000-taka denominations—to count them. After securing the cash in his wallet, the officer is seen conversing with the visitor while gesturing toward a ledger on his desk.

The footage was initially shared Sunday night on a Facebook page operated by a local journalist, quickly drawing sharp criticism from online observers. While the identity of the person delivering the envelope remains unknown and the audio of the interaction was muted, the visual evidence prompted immediate administrative action from the district police.
Inspector Das, who had been stationed in Bagmara for approximately three months, denied the allegations of bribery when reached for comment by the newspaper Prothom Alo. He suggested that the transaction may have been related to routine ration payments rather than illicit activity, claiming he was unaware of when or how the recording was made.

Rajshahi District Police spokesperson and Additional Superintendent of Police Sabina Yasmin confirmed the withdrawal of the inspector on Monday morning. She stated that the matter has been officially noted by authorities and that a formal investigation will determine further disciplinary measures.
