Police trainee dies during physical drills at Rajshahi academy

A probationary sub-inspector undergoing training at the Bangladesh Police Academy in Sarda, Rajshahi, died on Monday afternoon after collapsing during a physical exercise. The deceased, 45-year-old Jiban Rahman, a native of Munshiganj’s Srenagar area, was participating in a scheduled one-kilometer run as part of his training curriculum when he fell ill at approximately 4:40 p.m.

Chakradhar Roy, Assistant Superintendent of Police for administration at the academy, confirmed the death. Following his collapse, Rahman was rushed to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital, where attending physicians declared him dead upon arrival. While Shanker Kumar Biswas, a spokesperson for the hospital’s emergency department, indicated that the death was likely caused by cardiac arrest, he noted that a definitive cause could only be established through a formal autopsy.

The victim’s body was released to police custody without a post-mortem examination, as no foul play was suspected by the family or authorities. Local police officials, including Rajpara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abul Kalam Azad and Charghat Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Malek, confirmed that legal procedures regarding the incident are being finalized in coordination with senior leadership.

Rahman was among a cohort of approximately 650 sub-inspectors and sergeants whose original 2006 recruitment process had been canceled, only to be reinstated by the government nearly two decades later. Following a recent notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs, these officers were recalled to the police academy to undergo mandatory training, during which the fatal incident occurred.
