Police seize three pistols from suspect at Noakhali checkpoint

Police in Noakhali’s Begumganj upazila arrested a 21-year-old man on Monday after discovering an arsenal of weapons in his possession during a routine security operation. Abdur Rahman, also known as Rahim, was intercepted by officers at a police checkpoint stationed near the Baitun Noor Jame Mosque on the Gopalpur-Banglabazar road at approximately 6:15 p.m.

Authorities reported that Rahim, a resident of Basantabag village, was traveling on an unregistered motorcycle when officers grew suspicious of his behavior. A subsequent search of his person revealed three foreign-made pistols, eight rounds of ammunition, and three magazines tucked into his waistband. The motorcycle used by the suspect was seized as part of the evidence.

The arrest occurred amid an ongoing special security initiative launched by the Begumganj police to maintain law and order across critical locations in the upazila. According to Additional Superintendent of Police Abu Taiyab Md. Arif Hossain, the suspect is currently being held at the Begumganj police station, where he is undergoing interrogation regarding the origins of the firearms.

The arrest has prompted a localized political dispute. Kamakhya Chandra Das, president of the local BNP unit, alleged in a social media post that Rahman was affiliated with the Jamaat-e-Islami party. However, Jamaat-e-Islami district secretary Md. Borhan Uddin categorically denied these claims, asserting that the suspect has no formal ties to their organization. Borhan Uddin suggested that Rahman had recently been seen associating with a local Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activist named Samrat, and claimed the seized motorcycle belonged to the latter.

Begumganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Shamsuzzaman confirmed that the department would continue its crackdown on illegal arms and identified criminals in the region. He stated that formal legal proceedings have been initiated, and Rahim is scheduled to be produced before the Noakhali Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Tuesday.
