Police recover body of kidnapped five-year-old boy in Bangladesh after ransom demand

Police in Patiya, Chittagong, recovered the body of a five-year-old boy from a waste heap behind his family home early Thursday, ending a frantic search following his abduction a day earlier. The victim, Mohammad Jaihan, had been missing since Tuesday afternoon when he disappeared while playing near his residence in the South Gobindarkhil area.

The child’s family reported him missing after he failed to return home, but the situation escalated shortly after 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday when a ransom note was discovered near the family’s window. According to the child’s uncle, Raihan Uddin, the note demanded 300,000 taka in exchange for the boy’s safe return and instructed the father, Mohammad Shahjahan, to leave a mobile phone at a nearby abandoned shop to facilitate a video call once the payment was made.

Following the receipt of the ransom note, the boy’s father filed a formal report with the Patiya police station. Investigators subsequently detained four neighbors, including a man identified as Saiful and three of his family members, for questioning.

Patiya police station officer-in-charge Ziaul Haque confirmed that the breakthrough in the case came during the interrogation of the suspects. Acting on information provided by a teenage girl among those detained, police located the boy’s remains stuffed inside a sack within a pile of abandoned waste late Wednesday night.

Preliminary medical examinations revealed signs of blunt force trauma to the child’s head. Authorities stated that legal proceedings are currently underway against those in custody as the investigation into the abduction and subsequent murder continues.
