Police investigate toddler death after body found in abandoned septic tank in Sunamganj

Police in Sunamganj have launched an investigation into the death of an 11-month-old infant whose body was discovered inside a derelict septic tank on Monday. The child, Amir Hamza, was found in a water-filled tank approximately 500 yards from his home at the Lalpur cluster village in Gourarang Union.

The discovery followed a frantic search by the boy’s parents. According to the family, the infant’s mother, Sabikun Nahar, had left the child sleeping alongside his father, Sabbir Ahmad, at approximately 7 a.m. to visit her nearby parental home. When she returned two hours later, she found the infant missing and his father still asleep. A search of the area, initiated by the parents and supported by local residents, led to the grim discovery at the uncovered septic tank.

Authorities have detained four neighbors—Monir Hossain, his mother Rabeya Begum, Jahangir Alam, and his wife Afia Begum—for questioning regarding the incident. The infant’s parents contend that because their son was only 11 months old and unable to walk, he could not have reached the site on his own. They have publicly demanded a thorough investigation and justice for their child.
