Police detain man following fatal fire at Kalshi slum

A Dhaka court on Tuesday ordered 25-year-old Nazmul Hasan Moni to be remanded to jail in connection with a suspicious fire that gutted a portion of a slum in the city’s Pallabi area.

Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Hasib Ullah Piyash issued the detention order following a formal request from the police. Sub-Inspector Md. Mizanur Rahman of Pallabi Police Station, who is leading the investigation, presented the accused in court and argued that he should remain in custody to facilitate the ongoing inquiry. Deputy Inspector Saiful Islam of the Dhaka Metropolitan Prosecution division confirmed the proceedings.

According to court filings, investigators have gathered preliminary evidence linking the suspect to the blaze. Authorities are currently vetting information provided by the accused during initial questioning and contend that his continued detention is essential to ensure a thorough investigation and the impartial administration of justice.

The arrest followed a confrontation Monday afternoon when witnesses reported that Hasan had engaged in a dispute outside a shop within the Kalshi slum. Residents alleged that the suspect threatened to set the settlement on fire during the altercation. When a blaze erupted in the slum later that evening, local residents detained Hasan and turned him over to the police.
