Four Suspects Detained After Violent Clash With Police in Dhaka

Two police officers were injured Tuesday during an operation to apprehend a notorious criminal gang in Dhaka’s Adabor area, sparking a confrontation that ended with four suspects in custody. The incident occurred behind the Delta Garments factory as authorities pursued suspects allegedly linked to a violent mugging earlier that morning, in which a mobile banking agent was robbed of 300,000 taka in the Shekhertek neighborhood.
According to police, officers from the Adabor station were closing in on the suspects when they were ambushed by individuals wielding bladed weapons. In the ensuing struggle, Adabor Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zahidul Islam and Sub-Inspector Tarun sustained injuries. To regain control and defend against the attackers, police opened fire, wounding two of the suspects. Both injured men, identified as Rubel and Amir, were subsequently detained and transported to a hospital for treatment. Two others, Kashem and Joy, were also arrested at the scene.

While officials initially described the officers’ injuries as a result of being struck by weapons, Mohammadpur Zone Additional Deputy Commissioner Jewel Rana later characterized the injuries as minor, emphasizing that the officers were targeted during an attempted ambush.
Investigations have linked the attackers to the “Kobji-kata Anwar Group,” a criminal syndicate notorious for terrorizing the community. The gang, originally led by Anwar Hossain—a career criminal with over a dozen cases pending against him for charges ranging from robbery to murder—gained infamy for recording and posting videos of themselves severing the wrists of victims. Although Anwar has been incarcerated since 2015, the group remains active under the leadership of a figure known as “Accel Babu.”

The clash highlights a persistent public safety crisis in the Mohammadpur and Adabor regions, which the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has identified as high-risk zones for street crime. Intelligence reports indicate that more than 50 criminal syndicates operate within these neighborhoods. Of these, 17 major groups, each consisting of 15 to 20 members, exert control over illegal activities including drug trafficking, extortion, and armed robbery. These groups, which include local syndicates such as the Patali, Level High, and Gangchil gangs, have become increasingly bold, frequently using firearms and knives to carry out public attacks.
