Police arrest three as outlawed Awami League supporters stage rally in Shariatpur

Police in Naria Upazila of Shariatpur district have filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act against three individuals following a banned political demonstration held by activists of the Awami League. The suspects were apprehended during a protest march and motorcycle procession on the Dhaka-Shariatpur regional highway on Monday.
The demonstrators, including members of the now-restricted Awami League and its affiliated wings, Chhatra League and Jubo League, gathered in the Gagarijora area. Online footage, which has since circulated on social media, shows over 100 participants marching with banners commemorating August 15. The group chanted slogans supporting former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former lawmaker Iqbal Hossain.
The procession caused significant traffic disruptions along the highway near the Kotapara Bridge. Authorities from the local Palong Model Police Station launched an operation at the scene, resulting in the seizure of three motorcycles and the detention of three individuals.
The arrested suspects have been identified as Tushar Ahmed, 23, Al Amin Sardar, 26, and Riad Munshi, 49, all residents of Shariatpur Sadar Upazila. They were transferred to the Naria Police Station on Monday night. On Tuesday morning, a sub-inspector at Naria Police Station filed a formal case against them under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Sub-Inspector Jasim Uddin stated that law enforcement is currently reviewing video evidence to identify other participants involved in the event. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining individuals identified in the footage.
