Police arrest 18 after clashes over alleged restoration plot by outlawed political group in Gopalganj

Police in Kashiani, Gopalganj, have filed a case against 120 leaders and activists affiliated with the banned Awami League and its associate organizations, citing allegations of conspiracy to commit sabotage. The legal action, brought under the Anti-Terrorism Act, also lists between 200 and 300 unidentified individuals as suspects. Authorities have confirmed the arrest of 18 people in connection with the incident.
The complaint was lodged at the Kashiani Police Station on Wednesday night by Imdadul Haque, the general secretary of the Ratail Union unit of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). According to the case documents, the charges stem from a disruption on the Dhaka-Khulna highway on the afternoon of July 14, when a group gathered in the Tilchara area to block traffic. The complaint alleges that the gathering was part of a broader conspiracy to facilitate the return of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to power.

The complainant stated that he was traveling by motorcycle when he encountered the blockade. He reported that the group attacked him and his companion, subsequently setting their motorcycle on fire. The incident reportedly caused widespread panic and unrest in the local community. Police arrived at the scene shortly after, prompting the suspects to flee.
Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Muksudpur Circle, Nafichur Rahman, confirmed the investigation into the highway blockade, the assault on political rivals, and the arson attack. The 18 individuals taken into custody have since been remanded to jail by the court, and law enforcement officials remain engaged in ongoing operations to locate and apprehend the remaining suspects.
