Pagal Hasan’s second death anniversary: He is alive in the hearts of his loved ones

Mad Hasan mingled more with ordinary people. These are the people who remember him for his songs and lyrics. Musician Pagal Hasan is and will remain in their hearts. Cultural worker Dewan Gias Chowdhury said this about Sunamganj’s young musician, lyricist and composer Motiur Rahman Hasan aka Pagal Hasan.
Today marks two years of Pagal Hasan’s death. He died in a road accident on the morning of April 18, 2024 in Surma Setu area of Sunamganj’s Chatak Upazila. On the occasion of the second death anniversary, a memorial service has been organized at the District Arts Academy on Saturday evening.
Pagal Hasan is gone, but his songs, words and tunes are still alive. The audience, artistes, friends and fans have kept him in line in the line of ‘Jeevan Khatay Prem Kalanka Daggaia/ Chetiya Jayonare Bandhu Maya Lagaiya…’
An open stage named after Pagal Hasan has been named as ‘Pagal Hasan Kunj’ in District Arts Academy premises. District cultural officer Ahmed Manjurul Haque Chowdhury said that he will be remembered here. Apart from this, the city’s cultural organization Spandan’s annual event ‘Baishakhi Spandan’ has also been dedicated to him.
In his short life of only 33 years, Pagal Hasan wrote numerous mysterious songs. He sang them himself. His songs were a mixture of illusion, pain and spirituality. There was also a distinctiveness in the singing—as if the inner sadness would pour out into melody. Hasan married Lutfa Begum, a resident of Sunamganj city in 2011. They have two sons in their family.
Pagal Hasan is the son of farmer Dilowar Hossain (Dilshad) and Amina Begum of Shimultala village of Chatak Upazila. He lost his father in childhood and grew up struggling with poverty. In addition to studying, he did various works under tension. Later, he took a job as an office assistant in a government technical school. But the pull towards music pulled him into the cultural arena.
According to family and close friends, the hardships of life are reflected in his songs. He himself used to say that to write songs, one needs a ‘full of sorrow’. That sadness became the main tone of his creation. He had an easy life. Suppressing sadness inside, he used to forget everyone with a shy smile outside.
Pagal Hasan’s musical journey got a new momentum when he came in contact with musician and trainer Devdas Chowdhury in Sunamganj city. He joined the Spandan Sangeet School and gradually gained recognition by singing his own songs. Once he quit his job and concentrated on music. Formed a team called ‘Pagal Express’. Relatives said that the number of songs written by him is about 1000.
Pagal Hasan’s popular songs include- ‘Asmane Jaionare Bandhu Parbhan Na…’, ‘Jiwan Khatay Prem Kalanker Dagaya…’, ‘Dui Deen Sansari ar Micha Dunyadari…’, ‘Kairo Ghad Jaya-Aase Na…’, ‘Janatam Je Tomar Pirit Kachupatar Pani…’- and numerous other songs.
Pagal Hasan was close with Asif Akbar, a popular musician of the country. After his death, Asif Akbar wrote, “This young artist was gifted as a lyricist, composer and singer.”
Friends said that what Pagal Hasan used to earn by singing, he used to give a large part of it to others. So maybe after his death, many people got to know him anew, cried for him. His friends – Sohel Rana, Dewan Ghiyas Chowdhury, Ripon Chand, Samir Pallab, Mehedi Hasan, Kanu Chand, Atab Rahman, Susen Chand and many others organize regular gatherings and musical events to remember him in the cultural arena of Sunamganj.
Crazy Hasan may have realized this a long time ago. That’s why he sang, ‘When people die, they lose their worth/ When they are left, they are worse/ When they die, they get the best medal…!’
