Newborn infant rescued from hospital waste area in Munshiganj

Hospital staff and patients at the Gazaria Upazila Health Complex in Munshiganj rescued a live newborn baby abandoned near a trash bin late Monday night. The infant was discovered around 1:30 a.m. after nurses and relatives of admitted patients heard cries coming from the grounds of the facility.
Upon discovery, the newborn was immediately brought inside to receive emergency medical care. The attending physician, Dr. Saad Karim, noted that the infant sustained a minor head injury. Following initial stabilization, the baby was transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced treatment between 2:30 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., with assistance from local village police and administrative officials.

Medical personnel believe the child was born earlier that same night, though they confirmed the birth did not occur within the Gazaria Upazila Health Complex. Hospital authorities suspect the infant may have been delivered at a nearby clinic or diagnostic center before being discarded at the hospital site.
The incident has caused significant alarm in the surrounding community. As of Tuesday morning, authorities had not identified those responsible for the abandonment or the circumstances surrounding the event.

Gazaria Police Inspector (Investigation) Sabbir Hossain stated that a formal investigation is underway to determine the origin of the infant and the identity of the individuals involved. He added that local law enforcement is coordinating with the social services office and the Upazila administration to ensure the child receives proper care and protection once discharged from the hospital.
