Narayanganj Gas Blast Burns Five, Including Child

Five members of the same family, including three children, sustained critical burn injuries early Sunday morning following a gas line leak explosion at their ground-floor apartment in Narayanganj’s Fatullah area. The victims were rushed to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka for urgent treatment.
The injured individuals are identified as Md. Kalam, 35, a vegetable vendor; his wife Saima, 32; their son Munna, 7; and daughters Munni, 10, and Katha, 7. All five remain in critical condition, battling extensive burns. The family, originally from Borukdia village in Patuakhali’s Bauphal Upazila, had been renting the flat in North Bhuigarh.

Eyewitnesses and fire service officials reported that gas had accumulated in the kitchen of Kalam’s flat from a leak in the gas line. An abrupt and deafening explosion ripped through the apartment, igniting a fire in the kitchen and other areas, shattering windows, and damaging a section of the building’s boundary wall. Neighbours quickly responded to the scene, assisting in the rescue of the family members.
Saima Begum, speaking to passerby Rakib who aided in their rescue, recounted that the family was asleep when a violent explosion engulfed the room in flames before they could comprehend what was happening. Her husband, Md. Kalam, reportedly told Rakib that the entire flat erupted in fire with a thunderous sound as he attempted to light the kitchen stove in the early hours. The family managed to escape the burning apartment with great difficulty.

Abdullah Al Arefin, Deputy Assistant Director of the Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defense, confirmed to the national daily *Prothom Alo* that the explosion was caused by gas accumulating in the room due to a gas line leak in the kitchen. He stated that five members of the same family, including children, were burned, and neighbours transported them to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery for critical care. Fire service officials initially suspect the explosion occurred when a tenant attempted to ignite a cigarette lighter, triggering the blast in the gas-filled flat.
According to Dr. Shaon Bin Rahman, the resident physician at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, the extent of injuries is severe. Md. Kalam sustained burns to 95% of his body, his wife Saima to 60%, son Munna to 30%, daughter Munni to 35%, and daughter Katha to 52%. All five are currently receiving treatment in the emergency department.
