Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir Elected President Amidst Widespread Celebrations in Thakurgaon

THAKURGAON — Supporters and residents in Thakurgaon celebrated on Thursday following the election of Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir as the new President of the country. Jubilant crowds gathered across the district, setting off fireworks and distributing sweets to mark the political milestone for their local representative.

The presidential election took place at the National Parliament, where voting concluded between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir secured victory over his challenger, Colonel (retd) Oli Ahmed, who represented an 11-party alliance led by Jamaat. Chief Election Commissioner A M M Nasir Uddin announced the official results, confirming that Mirza Fakhrul received 255 votes compared to 88 votes for Colonel Oli Ahmed.

Following the announcement, supporters from various factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), including the Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal, congregated outside the district party office. The atmosphere was celebratory as activists chanted slogans and lit fireworks, hailing the result as a long-awaited achievement for their leader.

Local party leaders, including Thakurgaon district Swechchhasebak Dal General Secretary Md. Kamruzzaman, Jubo Dal President Abu Hanif, joint convener Md. Kayes, and district Chhatra Dal President Suman Islam, were seen distributing sweets along Shahid Mohammad Ali Road in the municipal town. Md. Kayes praised the victory, stating that Mirza Fakhrul has long been viewed as a guardian figure whose political sacrifices are recognized nationally. He added that the entire district shares in the pride of seeing him ascend to the nation’s highest office.

The sentiment of joy extended beyond party circles. Anwar Hossain, who oversees the local BNP office, shared his enthusiasm with the community, noting that the election result was a moment of immense satisfaction for the region. Rup Kumar Guhathakurta, a local cultural activist, remarked that the elevation of Mirza Fakhrul was a well-deserved honor for a man with deep roots in the district’s sports and cultural spheres.

Public expectations remain high regarding the incoming president’s tenure. Rehena Begum, a local educator, expressed hope that Mirza Fakhrul would transcend partisan politics to serve as a symbol of unity for the entire nation. She further emphasized the local community’s desire for him to remain attentive to the development needs of Thakurgaon.

Abdul Latif, president of the Thakurgaon branch of the civil society organization Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN), observed that the election has been met with broad approval. He noted that residents across the political spectrum hold the new president in high regard and are collectively buoyed by the outcome.
