A tense situation has arisen in the Rajshahi University of Engineering and Technology (RUET) campus late at night with graffiti and banner burning. Yesterday Sunday at around 12:30 pm, a group of students took out a protest march against open and secret politics, which gradually grew in size.

The situation became heated when the procession reached in front of the Martyr President Ziaur Rahman Hall around 1:30 am. At that time, Chhatra Dal-supported students raised slogans in favor of the party while other students in the procession raised slogans against Chhatra politics. Tensions flared for some time with counter-slogans. Later, the procession moved from there around two o’clock in the night.

According to university sources, there was already a ban on political activities of teachers, officials and employees in Ruet. The same ban is imposed on students after August 5, 2024. However, there are allegations of overt and undercover political activities under the cover of various organizations.

After the clash in Chittagong City College on April 23, walls were painted against secret politics using the name of Nationalist Chhatra Dal at various places in Ruet campus. A section of students responded with this. In continuation of this yesterday afternoon some students protested against both overt and covert politics and hung a banner in front of the central library. Later, some students associated with Chhatra Dal were accused of opening the banner and setting it on fire.

Meanwhile, when the incident was aired on a Facebook page called ‘Ruet Jatiyatavadi Spandan’, the matter came into more discussion and anger spread among the students.

Eyewitnesses said that the procession, which started late at night, went around various roads and residential areas of the campus and went in front of Zia Hall, causing tension between the two sides. There, 30 to 35 pro-Chhatra Dal students raised slogans.

A student on condition of anonymity said that student politics is not open in Ruet; However, politics is going on under various names in secret. Chhatra Dal wants to give open committees here, but a large section of students do not want any kind of politics.

The concerned persons of the university administration went to the spot to bring the situation under control.

Later the situation became normal. Professor Rabiul Islam Sarkar, Director of RUET’s Student Welfare Office, said that there has been tension among students over student politics. All kinds of political activities – public and private – are prohibited here. After August 5 no one could give the committee. However, news of various activities are coming on social media, which is increasing the tension. Action will be taken as per rules if found involved.

Meanwhile, the students have announced a sit-in program on Monday afternoon to demand an end to open and secret politics. They claim that due to this situation, classes and examination activities are currently closed in the campus.
