Manikganj Court Sentences Woman to Ten Days Imprisonment for Filing False Dowry Case

A Manikganj court sentenced a woman to 10 days in prison on Thursday after finding her guilty of filing a false dowry case against her husband. Judicial Magistrate Dolan Biswas of the Manikganj Judicial Magistrate Court-2 delivered the verdict in the presence of both the complainant, Lovely Akter, and the accused, Ariful Islam.

Following the ruling, the court acquitted Ariful Islam of all charges after evidence confirmed the allegations were fabricated. The court subsequently granted bail to Lovely Akter under the condition that she files an appeal against the conviction within one month.

The legal dispute dates back to January 22, 2021, when Lovely Akter married Ariful Islam, a resident of Char Nayadangi village in the Singair Upazila of Manikganj. Following domestic disputes, Akter filed a lawsuit on March 15, 2022, under Section 3 of the Dowry Prohibition Act, alleging that her husband had demanded 500,000 taka in dowry before assaulting her and forcing her out of their home.

During the trial, the court heard testimonies from three individuals, including the complainant. However, during cross-examination, the defense counsel presented evidence proving that the accused had moved abroad seven months prior to the date of the alleged incident. The court determined that the accused could not have committed the act as described in the complaint, leading to his acquittal and the subsequent punishment of the complainant for filing a false case.

Defense lawyer Samapti Akter stated that the court granted bail to the convicted woman on a 1,000 taka bond, contingent upon the requirement that she initiates the appeal process within the next 30 days.
