Madaripur residents gather on riverbanks for traditional Eid Kabaddi matches

Residents of Madaripur celebrated the Eid al-Fitr holidays on Saturday by gathering on the banks of the Bilpadma River to witness a traditional kabaddi tournament. Held in the Char Lakshmipur area of Chillar Char Union, the event drew thousands of spectators who crowded the riverbank to support local athletes and engage in the festive spirit of the national sport.
Organized by the humanitarian organization “Swapner Alo,” the tournament was held approximately 30 kilometers from Madaripur town. Despite the intense afternoon heat, the makeshift field was filled to capacity as local teams competed in a high-stakes 40-minute match. Ultimately, the “Banglar Damal” team claimed victory by defeating the “Probashir King Club” with a score of 1-0. Following the conclusion of the match, both teams were presented with trophies, cash prizes, and television sets.
For many attendees, the event served as a rare opportunity to witness a sport that was once a staple of rural life but has become increasingly uncommon in recent years. Spectators praised the organizers for transforming the riverbank into a communal hub, noting that the gathering provided families and children with a welcome diversion during the third day of Eid celebrations.
The athletes involved expressed a collective desire to see more frequent support for traditional sports. Participating players emphasized that beyond the thrill of competition, such events play a crucial role in reconnecting the younger generation with their cultural heritage. Many urged local leaders and community organizations to prioritize similar initiatives to ensure the continued vitality of traditional games.
According to organizers, the event is part of a broader mission to divert the youth from substance abuse and antisocial behavior through sports. Mohammad Fazlul Hawlader, one of the primary organizers, stated that “Swapner Alo” remains committed to promoting a healthier lifestyle by planning a series of future athletic events, including football and cricket tournaments. The group aims to continue fostering community cohesion and keeping the youth engaged in physical activities that promote both health and social unity.
