Local BNP Leader Killed in Dhaka Stabbing Following Dispute Over Football Match

A local leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was killed and another man was injured in a targeted knife attack in the Adabor area of the capital on Wednesday night. The victim, 45-year-old Md. Abul Bashar, who served as the general secretary of the party’s Nabodoy Housing unit, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
The violence erupted around 8:30 p.m. near a four-way intersection in Nabodoy Housing. According to police and family members, the altercation originated from a dispute over a FIFA World Cup football match between Brazil and Japan. Tensions had escalated in recent days after an incident involving a whistle-blowing dispute between a local party figure named Habib and a teenager, leading to multiple confrontations.

Bashar and another man identified as Md. Saddam, 35, were attending a mediation meeting intended to resolve the ongoing conflict. As they were returning from the session near the Nabodoy raw market, a group of eight to 10 assailants armed with sharp weapons ambushed them. Both men sustained critical injuries during the assault.
The victims were initially transported to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital before being transferred to the One-Stop Emergency Center at DMCH. Despite medical intervention, Bashar was pronounced dead at approximately 11:45 p.m. Saddam remains hospitalized with injuries, though his condition has not been detailed further.

Jewel Rana, Additional Deputy Commissioner of the Mohammadpur zone, confirmed the death and stated that law enforcement is actively working to identify and apprehend the suspects involved in the attack. Police investigators are currently treating the incident as a targeted homicide linked to the localized feuding.
Bashar, a native of Nandail, Mymensingh, worked professionally as a private car driver and resided in a rented home in Adabor’s B-block with his wife and two children. Hospital police inspector Md. Faruk confirmed that the body has been transferred to the morgue for a post-mortem examination, following which it will be released to the family for funeral rites.
