Lighter ship sinks in Karnaphuli River, 12 crew members rescued

A lighter vessel carrying a cargo of stone capsized in the Karnaphuli River near the Bangladesh Naval Academy in Chittagong early Tuesday morning, prompting a successful rescue operation by the Coast Guard.

The vessel, identified as the MV Bay Harbor-2 and owned by Bay Harbor Ltd., partially submerged near the academy’s training wall at approximately 5:30 a.m. Coast Guard officials confirmed that rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the scene, where they successfully pulled eight crew members to safety, followed by an additional four individuals shortly thereafter. All twelve were reported alive following the incident.

Despite the capsizing, the Chittagong Port Authority has reassured maritime operators that the accident will not disrupt the movement of vessels in or out of the port. According to Md. Nasir Uddin, the port’s chief personnel officer, the channel remains navigable and port operations are continuing as scheduled.

The vessel’s owners have initiated recovery efforts to clear the submerged craft from the river. Authorities have not yet identified the cause of the sinking, but the incident has not resulted in any reported navigation hazards for the busy commercial waterway.
