Khagrachhari court sentences tea vendor to death for raping minor girl

A court in Khagrachhari on Monday sentenced a 53-year-old tea vendor to death for the rape of a seven-year-old child in Ramgarh. Judge Shayla Sharmin of the Khagrachhari Child Violence Suppression Tribunal delivered the verdict in the presence of the defendant, Mohammad Shahin.
The incident occurred on July 25 of last year, when the victim, a second-grade student at a local madrasa, was subjected to the assault. Following the attack, the child’s father filed a formal case at the Ramgarh police station, leading to the swift arrest of the accused by local authorities.
Public Prosecutor Srijani Tripura confirmed the sentencing and stated that the defendant was taken into custody immediately following the proceedings. Expressing satisfaction with the outcome, Tripura noted that the court’s swift adjudication in this case serves to ensure justice for the victim.
Following the ruling, defense counsel Bedarul Islam indicated that the accused intends to challenge the verdict by filing an appeal in a higher court.
