A Dhaka metropolitan court has ordered television actor Zaher Alvi, also known as Niamat Ullah Bhuiyan, to be remanded in custody after denying his bail petition in a case involving the death of his wife, Afra Ivnath Khan Ikra. Alvi surrendered before Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin on Thursday, seeking relief from charges alleging he abetted his wife’s suicide.

State prosecutor Harun Or Rashid confirmed the court’s decision to reject the actor’s petition, following which Alvi was escorted to prison. The legal action stems from an incident on February 28, when Ikra was discovered hanging from a ceiling fan at their residence in the capital’s Mirpur DOHS area. Although she was rushed to Kurmitola General Hospital, medical staff pronounced her dead upon arrival. At the time of the tragedy, Alvi was reportedly in Nepal.

The case was filed by the victim’s father, Kabir Hayat Khan, at the Mirpur Model Police Station on the night of the incident. In his complaint, Khan alleged that persistent family disputes and physical and psychological abuse led his daughter to take her own life. The lawsuit explicitly names Alvi and other involved parties as responsible for inciting the suicide.

Alvi and Ikra were married in 2010 and share one son. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Ikra’s death remains ongoing.
