July Uprising Victim Testifies in Crimes Tribunal Regarding Rampura Shooting Incident

A victim of the July mass uprising testified before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Thursday, detailing the severe injuries he sustained during protests in the capital’s Rampura area.

Md. Ratul Hasan, a third-year marketing student at Tejgaon College, appeared as the 12th prosecution witness in a case involving crimes against humanity committed in the Rampura and Bonosree areas. During his testimony, Hasan recounted that he was a first-year student at the time of the uprising when he was shot in his left leg. He stated that the gunshot caused a severe fracture, resulting in the loss of approximately 1.5 inches of bone.

The case involves four defendants: former Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) official Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Redowanul Islam, BGB official Md. Rafat-bin-Alam Mun, former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Additional Deputy Commissioner Md. Rashedul Islam, and former Rampura Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Mashiur Rahman. Both Redowanul and Rafat are currently in custody at a military sub-jail, while Rashedul and Mashiur remain fugitives.

Hasan testified that he joined the protests in front of Rampura Multicare Hospital following Friday prayers on July 19, 2024. He alleged that security forces, including BGB personnel and police, opened fire on demonstrators without issuing any prior warning. While attempting to flee toward Better Life Hospital, a bullet struck the back of his leg below the knee and exited through the front.

Following the incident, the witness was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where he remained until his discharge on July 25, 2024. During the tribunal proceedings, Hasan displayed his injury to the court and noted that he subsequently underwent extensive treatment at Ibn Sina Hospital in Kalyanpur. He informed the tribunal that he has yet to fully recover from his injuries.

Citing information gathered from social media and television reports, Hasan alleged that the shooting was conducted by Redowanul, Rashedul, Mashiur, and an additional deputy commissioner. He further claimed that the order to open fire originated from the then-prime minister, the home minister, and Obaidul Quader. Hasan concluded his testimony by calling for justice against both those who executed the gunfire and those who issued the orders.
