Journalist unions demand justice and rehabilitation for July uprising victims

Journalist leaders gathered at the National Press Club on Wednesday to demand justice for the victims of the July mass uprising, calling for the immediate prosecution of those responsible and the rehabilitation of the injured. The event, organized by the Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists (BFUJ) and the Dhaka Union of Journalists (DUJ), marked the second anniversary of the fall of the Awami League government and the subsequent victory of the student-led movement.
Prior to the rally, participants held a victory march that departed from the National Press Club and traversed various city streets before returning to the venue. Leaders used the occasion to commemorate the students, children, and civilians who lost their lives during the demonstrations, emphasizing that their sacrifices must be honored through a swift and transparent legal process.
BFUJ Secretary General Quader Gani Chowdhury stated that the fall of the autocratic regime was a direct result of the unified movement of the students and the public. He urged authorities to bring those who launched indiscriminate and lethal attacks against protesters to justice, while simultaneously calling on journalists to remain vigilant in protecting democracy, freedom of expression, and public rights.
DUJ President Md. Shahidul Islam echoed these sentiments, stressing that the sacrifice made by students and journalists during the uprising demands a national commitment to accountability. He insisted that the perpetrators must face exemplary punishment to ensure justice for the victims and to restore faith in the rule of law.
The program was attended by prominent figures including BFUJ President Obaydur Rahman Shahin, DUJ General Secretary Khurshid Alam, and various other leadership figures from the unions and the press community. Notable attendees included Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Managing Director and Chief Editor Kamal Uddin Sabuj, Chief Information Officer of the Press Information Department Syed Abdal Ahmed, National Press Club President Hasan Hafiz, and Bangladesh Journalist Welfare Trust Managing Director Mohammad Abdul Bashir. The assembly underscored a collective resolve among media professionals to hold the architects of the violence accountable as the nation continues to reflect on the legacy of the uprising.
