Jamaat-e-Islami terms proposed national budget as loan-dependent and prone to corruption

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar has sharply criticized the proposed national budget, describing it as an ambitious, foreign-debt-dependent plan that risks facilitating financial exploitation. Speaking to reporters following an educational workshop for party members in Bhola on Saturday, Parwar asserted that the government’s fiscal roadmap fails to meet public expectations and lacks the structural reforms necessary to ensure national economic stability.

Parwar revealed that Jamaat-e-Islami has submitted an alternative budget proposal, urging the government to incorporate these recommendations before the budget is finalized in parliament on June 30. He argued that the current administration ignored key proposals regarding revenue growth, tax structure reform, corruption control, and investment incentives, opting instead for a model that relies heavily on external borrowing rather than domestic economic self-sufficiency.

Highlighting the systemic risks of corruption, the secretary general warned that without rigorous oversight in public administration, the judiciary, and anti-corruption agencies, the budget remains vulnerable to misuse for partisan interests. He further criticized the government’s approach to utility management, noting that recent hikes in gas, fuel, and electricity prices have placed an unsustainable burden on the public. Parwar cautioned that if the government continues to ignore these grievances, it risks further alienation from the citizenry.

Addressing the political landscape, Parwar emphasized the necessity of implementing the “July Charter,” a set of proposed reforms aimed at preventing the concentration of unchecked power in the hands of a single individual. He argued that the charter is essential to curb institutional politicization, capital flight, and the suppression of dissent. While noting that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expressed reservations through a “note of dissent,” Parwar insisted that the public mandate for reform must be respected to prevent the nation from sliding back into authoritarianism.

The event, which drew local leaders from across the region, underscored Jamaat’s push for a fundamental restructuring of state institutions. Parwar reiterated that unless the government adopts significant legislative and administrative changes, the state remains susceptible to the same cycles of corruption and dysfunction that have long hindered the country’s development.
