Jagannath University forms probe committee following violent clashes between student factions

Jagannath University authorities have launched a four-member investigative committee following a series of violent clashes between the student wing of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), and members of the Central Students’ Council (JAKSU) and Jatiya Chhatra Shakti. The confrontations, which erupted during events marking the second anniversary of the July mass uprising, prompted the administration to initiate an inquiry to identify the perpetrators and prevent further unrest.
The committee is chaired by Professor Mostafa Hasan of the Department of Social Work, with Deputy Registrar Md. Shahidullah serving as the member secretary. The panel also includes Professor Mohammad Mostafizur Rahman from the Department of Chemistry and Associate Professor Mezbah-ul-Azam Sowdagor from the Department of Political Science. They have been tasked with determining the root cause of the violence and submitting a comprehensive report with recommendations for disciplinary action.
The conflict began around noon on Tuesday when disagreements over entry into a commemorative seminar escalated into physical altercations. The unrest persisted until 4 p.m., spreading from the university auditorium to the Shaheed Minar area and a nearby hospital facility. Notably, the leadership of the Central Students’ Council is largely comprised of members affiliated with the Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Vice-Chancellor Md. Rais Uddin addressed the campus crisis during an emergency press briefing, expressing deep frustration over the disruption of a high-profile event attended by University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Professor Mamun Ahmed. The administration had held multiple coordination meetings prior to the event to ensure a peaceful observance, but these efforts were undermined when opposing student groups refused to heed the Vice-Chancellor’s direct appeals for restraint.
Asserting that there is no tolerance for violence or terrorism on campus, the Vice-Chancellor confirmed that the university is prioritizing the safety of its students, faculty, and staff. He emphasized that the administration intends to hold all involved individuals accountable under university regulations regardless of their political affiliations. The investigative committee has been directed to complete its findings and submit its recommendations as quickly as possible to restore order and ensure the continuation of a stable academic environment.
