India repatriates 10 Bangladeshi nationals after prison terms

Ten Bangladeshi nationals returned home on Tuesday through the Tamabil land port in Sylhet following the completion of prison sentences served in India. The group was handed over to Bangladeshi authorities by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) during a formal exchange conducted at the immigration checkpoint.

The returnees, ranging in age from 19 to 35, hail from various districts including Rajshahi, Chapainawabganj, Sherpur, and Netrakona. According to officials at the Tamabil immigration office, the individuals had been apprehended by Indian police and border forces after crossing the border illegally at various points, including the Kaliganj frontier in Chapainawabganj and sections of the Sylhet border. They were subsequently prosecuted and sentenced by Indian courts.

Following the conclusion of their sentences, the Bangladesh government initiated legal proceedings to facilitate their repatriation. The handover process was overseen by members of the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the BSF, and immigration officials from both nations.

Sub-Inspector Bazlur Rashid, the officer in charge of Tamabil immigration, confirmed that the returnees underwent identity verification and necessary administrative formalities upon their arrival. Following the processing, they were reunited with their families, who had been waiting at the border to receive them. Gowainghat Police Station officer-in-charge Omar Faruk corroborated that all individuals were released into the custody of their relatives after the completion of the mandatory legal protocols.
