Dinesh Trivedi, the newly appointed Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, emphasized the deep-rooted cultural and historical ties between the two nations as he prepared to assume his new role. Speaking to reporters in Kolkata on Thursday after visiting Netaji Bhawan, Trivedi underscored that the bond between India and Bangladesh extends far beyond shared borders, rooted instead in a collective vision for regional prosperity and democratic values.
Trivedi, who is scheduled to arrive in Dhaka on Friday, noted that his primary objective as High Commissioner is to foster stronger connections between the citizens of both countries. Addressing the shared challenges and aspirations of the two populations, he described the relationship as one between siblings, noting that the people of India and Bangladesh are united by a common atmosphere, sky, and shared destiny. He expressed confidence that these ties, bolstered by mutual sincerity and affection, are sufficient to overcome any bilateral hurdles.
In an unprecedented move for Indian diplomacy, the appointment of Trivedi—a former Union Railway Minister—marks the first time in 55 years of bilateral relations that New Delhi has selected an active politician for the post in Dhaka. Trivedi expressed a deep sense of responsibility regarding this assignment, noting that he sought inspiration from the legacy of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, whose ideals of democracy and service shaped his own upbringing in Kolkata.
Reflecting on his new mandate, Trivedi spoke of a unified vision for 160 million people, encompassing both the Indian and Bangladeshi populations. He stated that his tenure would be guided by the democratic values championed by figures such as Netaji, Sri Aurobindo, and Swami Vivekananda. By framing his mission as a collective pursuit of welfare for the people of both nations, Trivedi signaled an intent to prioritize people-to-people diplomacy over traditional administrative concerns, asserting that the mutual success of the two countries is inextricably linked.
