BNP activist killed in Mymensingh following altercation with local Jamaat leaders son

A 28-year-old auto-rickshaw driver and political activist was killed in a stabbing attack in Mymensingh on Tuesday, an incident authorities are attributing to long-standing local tensions. Rana Mia, identified by his family as a dedicated activist for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), succumbed to his injuries at Mymensingh Medical College Hospital shortly after the 5:00 p.m. assault in the Char Ishwardia village area.
The victim’s family alleges that the fatal attack was carried out by a group of approximately 50 to 60 individuals led by Mahin, the son of Mofidul Islam, a member of the Mymensingh Metropolitan Jamaat-e-Islami working committee. Relatives claim the confrontation stems from political animosity dating back to the last general election, when Rana campaigned for a BNP candidate. The situation reportedly escalated on Monday following a minor verbal dispute between local youths and members of the Jamaat leader’s family, leading to an initial confrontation that was briefly quelled by local elders before the violence turned lethal the following afternoon.

In addition to the fatality, at least five others sustained injuries during the attack. Tofazzal Hossain, the victim’s brother, has publicly demanded the execution of those responsible, accusing Mahin of delivering the fatal stab wound to Rana’s chest.
Local political figures have offered conflicting accounts of the motivation behind the violence. Mofidul Islam has denied his involvement or that of his son, dismissing the accusations as a smear campaign. Similarly, Kamrul Ahsan, the Mymensingh Metropolitan Amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, asserted that the incident was the result of a communal dispute rather than political rivalry.

Conversely, Abu Wahab Akhand, the member of parliament for Mymensingh-4, labeled the killing a targeted political hit. He condemned the act as a calculated strike against a committed BNP activist and stated that he has instructed law enforcement to ensure the immediate arrest of all suspects involved.
Police have confirmed that the area remains tense and under heavy security guard to prevent further instability. Abdullah Al Mamun, the Additional Superintendent of Police for Mymensingh, stated that preliminary investigations suggest the killing was motivated by political conflict. Law enforcement officials confirmed that legal proceedings are currently underway as they work to restore order in the region.
