On both sides of the road, a stream of water is coming to the shops next to the footpath due to the impact of car wheels. The sidewalks on both sides of the road are also submerged in water. Pedestrians have to fight to cross the road submerged under dirty, smelly water. Someone went down into the water with shoes in hand and clothes wrapped up. Someone crossed the place by crossing the road divider. Long queues of cars on both sides of the road. The entire area is immobile due to heavy traffic.
Today Monday at 12 noon, the image that can be seen at Pravartak Mor area of Chittagong city and R. Nizam Road. Light rain in the city this morning. According to the Ambagan Meteorological Department, only 2 mm of rainfall was recorded from 9 am yesterday to 9 am today. In this little rain, water accumulates on the road. On one side of the road, the expansion of Hijra canal is going on. There is a temporary embankment at the mouth of the canal. Due to this, even if it does not rain, water accumulates on the roads in this area. And this morning’s light rain has increased the amount of water several times.
Due to water in the road in the promoter area, there was severe traffic jam in GEC intersection, Golpahar and surrounding areas since this morning. It took an hour or more to cross the less than half a kilometer road from GEC junction to Pravartak junction.
At 12 noon, it was seen that the entire area from Badna Shah Mazar Gate of Chittagong Medical College Hospital to Pravartak Mor was submerged in water. Canal expansion work is underway on the Badna Shah Maza section of the road. Due to the temporary embankment at the mouth of the canal, drainage is being disrupted. As a result, overflow water from the canal is flowing directly to the road. As a result, long queues of vehicles have formed on both sides of the road. A situation has arisen where water takes time to cross the space. 20-25 pedestrians gathered on the side of the water-logged road. They needed time to decide how to cross the road.
Talked to Maqsood Alam, the sales representative of the private company there. He rolled his pants and said, now there is no speed except to go over the island (road divider). There is also a crowd of people. He slowly moved towards that direction. Before leaving, Maqsud Alam was saying, ‘It’s just starting to rain. If this is the case now, what will happen throughout the rainy season? Then it seems that it is not possible to leave the house.
Driver Shah Newaz was standing on the side of the road stopping the autorickshaw. His voice also had the fatigue of long experience. He said, ‘I have been driving in Chittagong for 15 years. Every monsoon there is knee-deep water here. But this time, water is rising every day for a month before monsoon. Don’t drive in this direction now.’
Mohammad Salim, a nearby shopkeeper, also spoke of the same ordeal. In his words, ‘work is going on here for a month. Every day the water rises at noon. Water since morning due to rain today. As long as there is water, the sale is closed. If the work is completed quickly, people’s suffering will be reduced.
The City Corporation says that the Hijra canal has joined the Phultali-Chaktai canal from Golpahar-Mehedibagh area via Chawkbazar and Kapasgola. The canal has narrowed due to long occupation. The actual width of the canal is about 30 feet but due to encroachment it has come down to 12 to 15 feet at many places.
