A launch coming from Dhaka lost control in a storm at Chandpur launch wharf and hit another launch at the wharf, damaging both launches. At least 10 passengers of the two launches were injured during the hasty landing. This incident happened on Monday afternoon.
Eyewitness passengers and rescue workers said that after two o’clock on Monday, the storm suddenly started raging in Chandpur. At that time, the passengers on the ‘Eagle-7’ launch from Dhaka were preparing to disembark at the launch ghat. At that time, the Eagle-7 launch lost control and was hit by another passenger launch ‘Mayur-2’ from Dhaka. The passengers of the two launches hurriedly disembarked in panic. Some of the passengers left their children, some with their bags and essential items and got down at the naval terminal. Local people along with Naval Police, Naval Fire Service, Coast Guard and Red Crescent members assisted the passengers.

Khadija Akhter of Shariatpur, who came from Dhaka by Eagle-7 launch, said, “I feel like I lost my life after being caught in the storm with two children.”
Abdullah, another passenger, said, “During the storm, I saved my life because I was in the cabin with my family.”

Mitali launch staff anchored at Chandpur launch ghat. Jasim Uddin said, ‘I have never seen such a storm in my life. As the two launches that came under the influence of such a storm near the wharf were overturned and damaged within moments, no passenger would have survived if they were in the middle of the river.
Abe Zamzam launch supervisor Biplab Sarkar said that several launches, pontoons and jetties of the ghat have been damaged in this storm. 10 people were injured when two passenger launches collided with the ghat. Apart from this, many launch passengers were stranded at the ghat for about three hours due to the storm.
Chandpur Naval Fire Service Station Officer Rakibul Islam said, “We were staying at the ghat since the storm started. In the fierce storm, the passengers of the two launches dropped their bags and goods and tried to get off quickly to save their lives. At least 10 people including women and children were injured in this rush. Some of the injured have been rescued and admitted to Chandpur Government General Hospital.
Chandpur Naval Police Superintendent Syed Mushfiqur Rahman said, ‘Immediately after this incident, Naval Police, Coast Guard, Fire Service and Scout members on duty in the ghat area started rescue and security operations. The law enforcement personnel evacuated the panicked passengers to a safe place and brought the situation under control. But I would request, during the storm it is better to put your own safety first and then passengers travel on the launch. But it has been seen that the weather is not good, the launches are carrying extra passengers. Still people are moving with risk.
