Husband of Late Actress Asma Akter Jhilik Sent to Jail Following Custodial Interrogation

A Dhaka court on Sunday ordered the husband of actress Asma Akter Jhilik to be held in jail pending further investigation into her death, following a fatal fall from a hospital balcony. Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam issued the order after the accused, 45-year-old Safiullah, also known as Mohabbat, completed a one-day remand period. No bail application was submitted on his behalf during the hearing.
Investigating officer Sub-Inspector Kazi Abdul Mannan of the Dhanmondi Model Police Station requested the court to keep the accused in custody until the investigation into the charges of abetting suicide is concluded. In his submission, the officer noted that Safiullah provided significant information during interrogation that is currently being verified. Investigators cautioned that granting bail at this stage could impede the ongoing probe.
The incident occurred following the hospitalization of Safiullah, who had been receiving medical care for severe abdominal pain. After being moved between several facilities, he was eventually admitted to the Bangladesh Medical College Hospital, where Jhilik had been attending to him. On June 12, the day of her death, Safiullah was cleared for discharge at approximately 10:00 a.m.
According to the case filing, Jhilik spoke with her younger sister via video call around 1:15 p.m. that afternoon. Roughly an hour later, Safiullah contacted Jhilik’s father to report that the actress had fallen from an open window on the balcony adjacent to the hospital cabin. She succumbed to her injuries shortly thereafter.
Following the death, the victim’s brother, Mozammel Haque, filed a case at the Dhanmondi Model Police Station accusing Safiullah of inciting suicide. Police arrested the husband on Saturday before securing the court’s permission for his initial remand.
