High Court Orders Progress Report on Safe Water Supply for Satkhira Shyamnagar Residents Within 60 Days

The High Court has directed the Chief Engineer of the Department of Public Health Engineering and the Deputy Commissioner of Satkhira to submit an affidavit within 60 days detailing the progress of initiatives taken to supply potable water to the residents of Shyamnagar Upazila.
A High Court bench, comprising Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice Fatema Anwar, issued the directive along with a rule following the preliminary hearing of a writ petition on Sunday. The rule seeks an explanation regarding the measures being taken to ensure the supply of safe and adequate drinking water for the inhabitants of the region.
The legal proceedings were initiated by the human rights organization Law and Life Foundation Trust. Prior to filing the writ, the organization had issued a legal notice to relevant authorities, including the Secretary of the Local Government Division and the Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources, demanding urgent action to address the persistent water crisis in the area.
During the hearing, Advocate Mohammad Humayun Kabir represented the petitioner, assisted by advocates Md. Kawsar and Maksudur Rahman. The state was represented by Deputy Attorney Generals Khan Ziaur Rahman and Mahfuz Bin Yusuf.
The writ petition highlights that Shyamnagar Upazila has been grappling with a severe shortage of drinking water for an extended period. The depletion of groundwater levels combined with high salinity has rendered most tube wells ineffective. The crisis typically reaches a critical stage annually between April and July, forcing residents to travel long distances in search of safe water, with women and children spending several hours each day to secure the essential resource.
