Heavy rains trigger widespread waterlogging and school closures across Dhaka

Heavy rainfall lashed Dhaka from late Saturday night through Sunday morning, paralyzing the capital and leaving major thoroughfares and residential streets submerged. The deluge, which intensified into a torrential downpour by dawn, continued unabated until approximately 7:00 a.m., causing widespread disruption to morning commuters and local infrastructure.
Significant waterlogging was reported across several key areas, including Green Road, Tejturibazar, Panthapath, Monipur, Bashundhara Residential Area, Dhanmondi, and Mohammadpur. In many locations, water levels rose to knee-deep or even waist-deep, rendering roads impassable for most vehicles and creating hazardous conditions for pedestrians.

The severe weather prompted the suspension of academic activities at the Monipur High School and College’s Sheorapara branch. With half-yearly examinations underway, the school’s administration moved to postpone the day’s tests following urgent appeals from concerned parents, many of whom found it impossible to safely navigate the flooded streets to bring their children to campus.
Commuters throughout the city faced extreme hardship as they attempted to reach their workplaces. Local residents and professionals reported wading through knee-deep water in neighborhoods like Adabor and Kalabagan. The main roads surrounding Mohammadpur police station and the streets behind Dhanmondi 32 were among the worst affected, forcing many to endure long, difficult treks through the rising floodwaters to reach their destinations.
