Heatwave persists in four districts as meteorologists forecast rain by Sunday

Bangladesh is grappling with an unseasonable intensification of heat as the monsoon season experiences a marked decline in rainfall. While the monsoon typically brings consistent precipitation, current weather patterns have been characterized by erratic rainfall and rising temperatures, leaving four districts—Rajshahi, Pabna, Jessore, and Khulna—under the influence of a heatwave that began late this week.
According to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department, the situation remained stagnant Saturday as the heatwave persisted in various parts of the country. Jessore recorded the highest temperature at 36.6 degrees Celsius, while the capital, Dhaka, also saw significant heat with mercury levels reaching 35.6 degrees Celsius. Meteorological standards define a heatwave as any temperature reaching or exceeding 36 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologist Md. Hafizur Rahman indicated that while hot conditions are expected to persist throughout the day due to low rainfall, relief may be on the horizon. Forecasts suggest a potential increase in precipitation starting Sunday, which is expected to lower temperatures across affected regions.
Despite the prevailing heat, some areas of the country remain shielded by localized rain. The Sylhet, Mymensingh, and Chittagong divisions have seen pockets of activity, with Sylhet recording the highest rainfall in the country yesterday at 58 millimeters.

The recent dry spell follows an already subdued start to the monsoon season. Although the monsoon winds arrived approximately one week behind their historical average this month, they have so far failed to deliver the robust rainfall totals usually associated with this time of year.
