Health and Family Welfare Adviser Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain ordered the immediate removal of Noakhali General Hospital’s superintendent, Dr. Mohammad Farid Uddin Chowdhury, following a surprise inspection that revealed severe mismanagement and unsanitary conditions.

The surprise visit took place on Tuesday afternoon, catching the facility’s leadership off guard. During the walkthrough, the Adviser inspected several departments, including the isolation wards designated for diarrhea and measles patients. Visibly angered by the state of the hospital, he publicly confronted the superintendent over the deplorable condition of the facility’s restrooms, questioning whether the official would find the environment acceptable for his own family.

The Adviser dismissed claims that maintenance efforts were underway, accusing the hospital administration of attempting a superficial cleanup only after his arrival. He emphasized that patients are taxpayers who deserve dignified care and stated that the administration’s negligence reflects poorly on the entire health sector.

In addition to the systemic hygiene failures, the Adviser received reports from patients and their families alleging that hospital ward boys were routinely demanding bribes in exchange for providing basic hospital beds. In response, he directed local authorities to identify those involved in the corruption and ensure that strict disciplinary action is taken against them.

Following the intervention, the Adviser instructed the district’s Civil Surgeon, Dr. Md. Anwar Hossain, to assume the duties of the hospital’s acting superintendent. District Administrator Muhammad Shafiqul Islam and other senior health officials arrived at the facility shortly after the directives were issued to coordinate the transition and address the immediate oversight concerns.
