Four tankers are coming to the country with 1 lakh 41 thousand tons of diesel

Three tankers (ships) carrying diesel are scheduled to arrive at Chittagong port today Friday. Another one will come next Sunday. In total, 1 lakh 41 thousand tons of diesel is being carried in 4 tankers. This amount of fuel can meet the demand of about 12 days.

According to sources of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), the diesel stock in the country was 1 lakh 55 thousand tons till Thursday. If the diesel of the new 4 tankers is released, the stock will increase to about 2 lakh 96 thousand tons. It will be possible to meet the demand of about 25 days with the total stock.

According to Chittagong port sources, MT Oaktree, MT Cape Boni and MT Lian Song Hu – these three tankers will arrive at the port today. And another tanker named MT Golden Horizon is scheduled to arrive on Sunday.

Nazrul Islam, Managing Director of Pride Shipping Lines, the local agent of the four tankers, said that all the tankers will reach the port within three days as per the scheduled schedule.

The uncertainty created over diesel this month, sources believe, will cut the increase in supply. According to BPC data, about 63 percent of the country’s total fuel demand is diesel-dependent. In the financial year 2024-25, the demand of diesel in the country was about 43 lakh 50 thousand tons. A major part of this is met through direct imports. And 7 to 7.5 million tons are available annually through crude oil refining.

Among fuel oils, diesel is used in versatile sectors. Major part of road transport such as buses, trucks, pickups, covered vans and goods vehicles are mainly diesel powered. Diesel is also used to drive irrigation in agriculture, operate boats on rivers, and run generators in many industries.

About 24 percent of the diesel used in the country goes to the agricultural sector. This fuel is also used in some power plants during power shortages. As a result, there is widespread reliance on diesel in the transport, agriculture, industry and power sectors.
