Former Jubo League leader dies in Chittagong Central Jail a day after arrest

A prominent political activist died at Chattogram Central Jail on Wednesday morning after suffering a medical emergency, just one day after being taken into police custody. Nurul Alam, a joint convener of the now-defunct Satkania upazila unit of the Jubo League, was pronounced dead by physicians after being rushed to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
Alam was apprehended by police on Tuesday in connection with an explosives case filed in Satkania earlier this year. Following his arrest, he was brought before a court and subsequently remanded to jail custody in the afternoon.
The deceased’s brother, Nur Mohammad, has challenged the legitimacy of the arrest, asserting that Alam was a victim of a targeted conspiracy. According to Mohammad, his brother had been involved in a long-standing land dispute with local leaders affiliated with the BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami. He claimed that Alam was detained by detective branch police while attending a hearing at the Satkania Land Office and insisted that his brother had no prior criminal record related to the charges cited by authorities.
Chattogram Central Jail Senior Superintendent Iqbal Hossain stated that Alam was held in the facility’s intake ward following his arrival on Tuesday evening. According to jail officials, he complained of sudden chest pain and respiratory distress on Wednesday morning. He was immediately transported to the prison hospital before being transferred to the medical college for emergency care, where he was declared dead.
Hossain maintained that Alam appeared to be in good health upon his initial admission to the prison, noting that there were no visible signs of trauma or injury on his body. He further confirmed that the facility would release the body to the family following a mandatory autopsy.
Satkania Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Jahangir Alam corroborated the account of the arrest, stating that the detective branch handled the apprehension and that Alam remained in good condition while at the station. Officials have categorically denied any allegations of mistreatment during the legal processing of the suspect.
