A retired chief Qari of Bangladesh Betar, Abu Rayhan, has been hospitalized with a fractured thigh bone following a violent dispute over property boundaries in Mymensingh’s Phulbaria upazila. The 64-year-old victim, who formerly taught at Dhaka’s Jamia Quraninia Arabia, was allegedly assaulted by his cousins on Sunday while attempting to install a fence along his property line in Kalibajail village.

The confrontation escalated after the suspects—identified as Mosharraf Hossain, Mahmudur Rahman, and Taslim Ahmed—claimed ownership of the land. According to police and local sources, the dispute had been ongoing for some time, but it turned physical during the weekend encounter, resulting in severe injury to Rayhan’s left femur.

The incident gained widespread public attention on Tuesday after the victim’s son, Iftekhar Jamil, who resides abroad, posted a plea for justice on social media. In his post, Jamil alleged that the attackers wielded their political affiliation with the Jamaat-e-Islami party to intimidate his family. He further claimed that local leadership had failed to intervene promptly, leaving his family in fear of further violence.

Following the viral reach of the post, local Jamaat-e-Islami Member of Parliament Kamrul Hasan visited the victim at his residence in Dhaka. Hasan stated that he instructed local authorities to take immediate action upon learning of the severity of the attack, while dismissing allegations that he had been negligent in responding to the situation.

A formal case was filed late Tuesday evening at the Phulbaria police station by Kawsar Jamil, another son of the victim, naming the three men as defendants. Among the accused, Mahmudur Rahman is reported to hold the position of Baitul Mal secretary for the local unit of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Phulbaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rashedul Hasan confirmed that officers arrested Mosharraf Hossain late Tuesday night following the filing of the case. Police have stated that the remaining suspects are being pursued and that the arrested individual will be presented before the court. The victim remains under medical care in Dhaka.
