Forest department officials seized five kilograms of deer meat from a market in Rangamati on Friday evening, following reports of illegal wildlife poaching in the region.

Acting on a tip-off that a group of poachers had slaughtered a barking deer and were attempting to sell the meat at the Samata Ghat market, authorities arrived at the scene around 5:30 p.m. However, the suspects managed to evade capture after detecting the officials’ approach and fleeing the area before they could be apprehended.

Khandaker Mahmudul Haque, the head range officer of the Chittagong Hill Tracts South Forest Division, confirmed that while the illicit contraband was successfully confiscated, the individuals responsible remain at large.

According to Haque, the department is currently awaiting judicial authorization to proceed with formal legal actions regarding the seizure. The incident highlights ongoing challenges in curbing illegal wildlife trafficking within the forested regions of the Hill Tracts.
