Flash floods triggered by days of torrential rainfall have decimated homes and livelihoods in the Banshkhali upazila of Chattogram, leaving scores of families displaced and struggling to meet basic needs. In the Bocharpara area of Shekherkhil Union, the landscape has been reduced to a scene of mud-caked ruins, where collapsed earthen walls and twisted corrugated iron roofs mark the sites of what were once bustling family homes.

For Abdul Kader and his wife, Rina Akter, the disaster struck on Wednesday night when a sudden surge of floodwater forced them to flee their residence with their children. Their home, which sheltered 15 people across two families, could not withstand the onslaught; the earthen walls softened and crumbled under the pressure of the rising water, while gale-force winds shredded the roof. Standing amid the wreckage, the couple faces an uncertain future, noting that their limited income as daily wage earners leaves them no financial recourse to rebuild their lives.

The devastation is widespread throughout Shekherkhil, where many residents remain displaced in shelters or at the homes of relatives. While the intensity of the rainfall has begun to subside, the receding waters have left behind thick layers of silt and a landscape of total destruction. Kitchens have been wiped out, household furniture is ruined, and critical infrastructure, including tube wells, remains submerged, triggering an acute shortage of potable water.

Agricultural losses are also mounting as the floodwaters refuse to drain, particularly in coastal unions. Amanullah, a farmer now living in the South Shekherkhil Government Primary School shelter, reported that his home remains flooded and his livestock have suffered significant losses. Having lost his fish stock and two goats to the deluge, he is currently managing his ten surviving cattle while facing the grim reality of being unable to cook or provide for his family.

Local authorities and aid efforts are currently grappling with the aftermath as the region transitions from the emergency rescue phase to the daunting task of recovery. For many, including the families of Bocharpara, the immediate focus remains on surviving the lack of clean water and shelter as they confront the total loss of their property and assets.
