Five arrested for chanting slogans in support of banned Awami League outside Gazipur police station

Police in Gazipur arrested five individuals on Sunday following an incident outside the Tongi East Police Station where slogans praising the now-banned Awami League were chanted.
The arrests occurred as officers were transferring Abdul Matin, the 47-year-old president of the Krishak League for Ward 47 in Tongi, into a prison van for his court appearance. Matin had been taken into custody by police on Saturday night and held at the station before the transport took place on Sunday afternoon.
As the suspect was being moved, his relatives and supporters began chanting slogans in support of the party. The five individuals taken into custody were identified as Mahdi Hasan, Harun Rashid, Johura Begum, Sharmin Sultana, and Shahida Akter, all residents of the Morkun area in Tongi.
Officer-in-Charge of Tongi East Police Station, Maksudul Alam, stated that the incident took place directly in front of the station premises. He noted that chanting such slogans in front of a police facility is unlawful, prompting officers to detain the group immediately before formally charging them.
Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman, acting on behalf of the station, has filed a case under the Anti-Terrorism Act. The complaint names seven specific individuals as suspects and includes an additional 10 to 12 unidentified persons.
