Feni Traders Dump Over One Hundred Hides Into River Following Market Slump

Two seasonal traders in Feni’s Dagonbhuiyan upazila dumped over 100 raw cow and goat hides into the Katakhali River on Friday after failing to find buyers for their stock. The incident, which occurred in Mamarizpur village, was captured on video and subsequently circulated on social media, drawing concern from local residents over potential environmental hazards.
The traders, Didarul Alam and Khurshid Alam, had purchased the hides from various locations during the Eid-ul-Adha festivities with the expectation of earning a profit. However, they were unable to secure a sale as the window for preserving the hides closed. By Friday, more than 24 hours after collection, the hides had begun to decompose in the intense summer heat, forcing the pair to discard them into the river to mitigate the spreading odor.

Khurshid Alam stated that they had spent the night attempting to contact hide merchants, but received no response. He noted that the ordeal resulted in a significant financial loss for the duo.
Dagonbhuiyan Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Shahidul Islam confirmed that administration officials are investigating the incident after viewing the footage. The UNO stated that the traders expressed regret for their actions during a meeting with the Assistant Commissioner (Land) and have pledged not to repeat the behavior. Officials noted that the traders should have alerted the local administration or public representatives if they were unable to sell the inventory.

The difficulty in selling hides has been a broader issue for local residents. While some, such as Feni city resident Fazlul Haque, opted to donate their hides to local madrasas, institutions are also facing market volatility. Administrators at local orphanages reported receiving over 100 hides this year but were forced to hand them over to wholesalers without a fixed price, expressing uncertainty regarding whether they will receive any payment, let alone the price points seen in previous years.
According to data from the Feni District Livestock Office, approximately 79,776 animals were sacrificed across the district’s six upazilas during this year’s Eid-ul-Adha, including over 63,000 cattle and nearly 17,000 goats and sheep.
