Father Dies After Week in Unconscious State

CHITTAGONG – An auto-rickshaw driver has died after spending a week in a coma following a robbery in Chittagong, sparking an outpouring of grief from his family who are demanding justice. Ayub Ali, 55, succumbed to his injuries at Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) on Monday, a week after being left unconscious by assailants who stole his vehicle.

The incident occurred on Monday, April 20, around 9 AM, when Ayub Ali, a resident of the Koikhain area in Anwara Upazila, was attacked. Robbers took his battery-powered auto-rickshaw, leaving him incapacitated near the Anwara Upazila Health Complex. Locals found him unconscious and took him to the health complex, from where relatives transferred him to CMCH at 12 PM the same day.

Despite intensive care, including a stint in the ICU, Ayub Ali never regained consciousness. His death, a week after the assault, has devastated his family, who had held onto hope for his recovery.

“We waited for my father for a week, calling out to God, but he never responded,” said his 19-year-old son, Mohammed Shahed, his voice choked with emotion while waiting for his father’s body at the CMCH morgue. “He left us while still unconscious. What will we do now? Why did this man have to die this way? We demand justice.”

Ayub Ali’s wife, Noor Nahar, believes her husband was incapacitated by passenger-disguised robbers who may have drugged him or used a chemical agent. She expressed hope that CCTV footage could help police identify the culprits. “The cheerful man left home healthy in the morning,” she recounted, speaking to a local media outlet by phone. “He didn’t regain consciousness despite a week of treatment. I couldn’t even say a last word to him before he left this world.”

Ayub Ali had been an auto-rickshaw driver for 15 years, tirelessly supporting his family. He had successfully married off his three daughters, and with his eldest son, Nazim Uddin, also contributing as a mason, the family had just begun to experience a measure of financial stability. His sudden and violent death has left them reeling. “My husband worked so hard to marry off three daughters,” Noor Nahar added. “We were just starting to see happiness with our two sons. Now he’s gone. I don’t know what will become of us.”

Ayub Ali’s body is currently at CMCH for post-mortem examination. There was an initial delay in the procedure due to family indecision, but police proceeded with the decision for an autopsy on Monday night. Anwara Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Junaid Chowdhury confirmed that legal action is being taken in connection with the incident.
