Faridpur-3 MP Chowdhury Nayab Yusuf Criticizes Poor Hygiene and Staff Shortages at Faridpur General Hospital

Chowdhury Nayab Yusuf, Member of Parliament for Faridpur-3, has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the environmental conditions and quality of service at the Faridpur General Hospital. Speaking during the inaugural meeting of the hospital’s management committee on Thursday, the lawmaker likened the facility’s current state to a garbage dump, citing significant waste accumulation behind the building.
The meeting, held at the hospital’s conference room, focused on addressing the systemic challenges facing the 100-bed institution, which was established in 1917. During his visit, Yusuf noted that the hospital is currently operating at double its capacity, with 200 patients straining a system designed for 100. He highlighted that many patients are forced to sleep on the floor due to a severe shortage of beds and medical personnel, including doctors, nurses, and cleaning staff.
Beyond the sanitation issues, the hospital has long faced criticism from patients and their families regarding chronic staff shortages, inadequate security, and the frequent practice of transferring critical patients to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Local residents have also reported persistent concerns over thefts and security lapses on the premises.
Addressing these shortcomings, Yusuf announced plans to upgrade the facility to a 250-bed hospital. He confirmed that a demi-official letter has been submitted to the Ministry of Health requesting funding for new infrastructure and modern medical equipment. While noting that the neglect accumulated over the past 17 years cannot be rectified overnight, the lawmaker expressed confidence that residents would see tangible improvements within the next year.
Yusuf emphasized the necessity of public accountability, noting that as an elected representative, he is committed to addressing the grievances of his constituents. The committee meeting also underscored the urgent need for enhanced emergency services, reliable medicine supplies, and more dynamic operational oversight from medical staff.
The session was attended by several high-ranking officials, including Civil Surgeon Mahmudul Hasan, Additional District Magistrate Sohrab Hossain, and Additional Superintendent of Police Fatema Islam. Other attendees included Deputy Director of Family Planning Kazi Faruk Ahmed, Deputy Director of the Directorate General of Health Services A.S.M. Anisur Rahman, and Deputy Director of the Department of Social Services Mohammad Ehiyatuzzaman.
