Elderly Homeowner Alleges Forced Eviction and Abuse by Son in Dhaka Property Dispute

An elderly man, who spent his youth working abroad to build a six-story residential building in the capital’s Mirpur area, now finds himself displaced and living in a rented flat in Uttara, estranged from the property he once operated as his family home and business base. M. Ali, a physically disabled senior, alleges that his youngest son and daughter-in-law forcibly evicted him from the premises, leaving him in a state of constant fear.
As reported by *Prothom Alo*, Mr. Ali claims his ordeal began after health complications forced him to shutter a garment factory he had previously established. According to his account, his younger son, M. M. Mahmud Sayed, and his daughter-in-law, Wahida Begum, threatened him with violence—at one point allegedly holding a knife to his throat—to seize control of the building. Mr. Ali states that he is now subjected to frequent intimidation, and those who offer him shelter are pressured and harassed, often through retaliatory litigation.

The conflict has fractured the family, with Mr. Ali’s eldest son, Wahid Zubayer, currently housing his father. Mr. Zubayer asserts that his younger brother is leveraging the property dispute to manipulate their father, while simultaneously subjecting the elder man to abuse. In response, Mahmud Sayed denies these allegations, claiming that his brother is exploiting their father’s frail health to seize total control of the family assets. He maintains that he merely occupies one unit within the building and that his father continues to collect rent from other tenants.
The dispute has spiraled into a complex web of overlapping police investigations and counter-lawsuits. One notable case involves a tenant, Kamal Shahriyar, who allegedly owed 150,000 taka in rent. When Mr. Ali demanded payment, he alleged that Shahriyar arrived with a group of men to threaten his eldest son. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) subsequently filed a charge sheet against Shahriyar and his family members after confirming the outstanding debt.

Conversely, Shahriyar filed his own case against Wahid Zubayer, accusing him of theft and attempted assault. While initial police reports dismissed these claims as unsubstantiated, the case was later reopened and transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The CID ultimately filed a charge sheet against Zubayer, an action he alleges is the result of collusion and unethical influence by his younger brother.
As the legal battles continue, M. Ali remains in hiding, expressing deep concern for his safety. He has petitioned the courts for the restoration of his property rights and has formally requested legal protection against those he claims have turned his own home into a site of terror and exploitation.
