A 73-year-old farmer in Bangladesh’s Netrokona district was found dead in a pond early Monday morning, hours after leaving home to watch the FIFA World Cup final. The victim, Abdul Hamid, a resident of Bahuli Madhyapara village in Purbadhala, had been reported missing since Sunday night.

According to local accounts, Hamid departed for the nearby Bahuli market around 11:00 p.m. on Sunday, telling his family that he intended to watch the match and pick up some groceries. When he failed to return home following the game, relatives began a search. At dawn, a local resident spotted a body floating in a pond while returning from the market, prompting villagers to investigate. Hamid’s son, Joj Miah, later confirmed the identity of the deceased.

Officers from the Purbadhala Police Station arrived on the scene to conduct an inquest into the death. Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun, the officer-in-charge, stated that there were no visible signs of injury on the victim’s body.

Authorities have opted against performing an autopsy after family members submitted a formal request stating they had no suspicions regarding the death. Investigators believe that heavy rain may have rendered the path slippery, leading Hamid to accidentally fall into the pond while traveling home in the dark. The police have recorded a case of unnatural death as the investigation concludes.
